Pre-Genie

I’m Philip Regenie, author of Shadows of Control and currently writing Athena Smiled, a political thriller rooted in Los Alamos and the difficult territory between freedom, loyalty, and control.

Los Alamos is also part of my own story. I grew up there, the son of a nuclear engineer, before becoming a hippie and hitchhiking across America. I’ve spent much of my life moving between the engineer’s need to understand how things work and the wanderer’s curiosity about how other people see the world.

That curiosity has taken me through decades of building companies and software across finance, healthcare, communications, and AI. My platforms include Write and Be Found, Arkyvus, and Semanovo. Caring for my parents helped inspire Zanthion and deepened a conviction that runs through my work: technology should help people retain their independence and dignity.

Writing gives me another way to explore what happens when that dignity is threatened. I’m interested in the distance between good intentions and real consequences, the friendships that survive difficult choices, and the moment someone begins questioning what they once accepted. The questions behind my stories also drive my work: Who gets to decide? Who benefits? Can we build something better?

I believe in questioning authority, including my own assumptions, and in testing ideas by making something people can use. I’m the father of three grown sons, whom I’ve long considered happier, healthier, and wiser than me. I remain a stubborn optimist about what people can create.
