Athena Smiled
At midnight, he raises a toast to freedom. By morning, Chicago is burning. For decades, Leonard Mahoney and Jack Cransten have welcomed the new year in the mountains above Los Alamos. Their friendship has survived dangerous climbs, troubled childhoods, and the passing of years. This time, an overnight arrest ends their familiar ritual—and sets a catastrophe in motion. As America searches for an enemy, Len disappears into the frozen wilderness with Jack beside him. Back home, his wife Maria searches for the husband she thought she knew. An intelligence investigator follows the trail through a lifetime of private journals. And in the ruins of Chicago, a nurse fights to save the people everyone else has reduced to numbers. Len believes he can still protect those he loves. But the truth he carries will force his oldest friend to confront an unbearable question: how do you stand beside someone whose actions you cannot forgive? Set against New Mexico’s stark mountain beauty, Athena Smiled is a story of friendship, devastating conviction, and the moment a man’s determination to protect his family becomes a threat to everyone else. For a longer, reader-facing synopsis: On New Year’s Eve, 1999, Los Alamos scientist Leonard Mahoney climbs into the snowy mountains with his lifelong friend, Jack Cransten. It is a ritual rooted in childhood: a difficult ascent, a shared drink, a toast to freedom. On the drive home, exhausted and unsteady, Len is arrested. Denied access to his phone and computer, he becomes increasingly desperate. The next morning, a nuclear explosion devastates Chicago. Before Jack can understand what has happened, Len insists they flee. Leaving their families behind, the two men retreat through frozen canyons toward a cave where, as teenagers, they pledged their loyalty to each other. Their wilderness skills may keep them alive. They cannot shelter Jack from the truth of Len’s involvement—or from the knowledge that his own parents were near the blast. Meanwhile, Maria struggles to hold her family together as her husband’s disappearance becomes something far more frightening. Intelligence investigator Jake Felenstein turns to Len’s journals, searching for the path from gifted child and devoted father to a man capable of holding a country hostage. What he finds challenges his understanding of both Len and the institutions pursuing him. In Chicago, nurse Anita Piazza and a frightened teenager move through shattered streets, helping the injured. Their small, necessary acts of care unfold alongside Len’s increasingly dangerous claims about saving the people he loves. As the search closes in and Len delivers an ultimatum backed by the threat of further destruction, friendship, marriage, and public duty face their hardest tests. Jack must decide what loyalty demands. Maria must find her own voice within the story Len has told himself about their lives. And Jake must confront how far his government will go to stop a man who believes that only absolute control can make anyone safe.
