San Francisco — Everyday Connections · wabf original fiction
A fictional mixed cash-and-contribution system exposes how a small cooperative values skill, materials and unpaid coordination.
Catalogue details
Description
Fogline quotes ordinary paid jobs while reserving a limited, explicitly agreed pool of reduced-cost work. Member contributions are recorded separately from customer payments. A contribution of time is not automatically interchangeable with money owed for rent or materials.
Economic system type
other
Primary currency
US dollars for expenses and invoices; internal contribution records are not currency
Resource base
Skilled labour, shared benches, repairable objects, spare parts, tools and the time needed to coordinate work.
Trade networks
Customers bring or arrange collection of objects; Rafa can carry suitable loads. Parts come from ordinary purchases and authorised salvage. Each job records who supplies materials and who receives the finished object.
Wealth distribution
Members negotiate shares and overhead; unequal available time creates recurring tension.
Key industries
Furniture restoration, small object repair, documentation and bounded teaching sessions.
Governing bodies
The fictional cooperative meeting sets allocations. No tax, employment or legal-compliance conclusion is implied by this story model.
Impact on society
The system can preserve useful objects and local skill while concealing unpaid administrative work. A generous discount may shift cost onto another member unless the group explicitly accepts it.
Historical evolution
The exchange began informally when members shared a replacement workspace. Increasing demand forced them to distinguish favours, paid work and agreed mutual aid.
Notes
WABF original fictional economic model. Exact prices, balances and budgets are intentionally open for a story or game; this is not a statement about San Francisco’s whole economy.
Writing with this entry
Scene starters
- A customer offers an object as payment that the cooperative cannot use to pay its bills.
- A member’s carefully counted labour hours reveal that another member has been doing invisible coordination.
Continuity constraints
- The fictional cooperative meeting sets allocations. No tax, employment or legal-compliance conclusion is implied by this story model.
- Goods, time and money must not be counted twice; a promised contribution is not the same as a completed handoff.
Adaptation notes
Use the described flows and constraints to build a local ledger or resource game. Choose explicit quantities and prices for that work, and keep them separate from real-world statistics.
Sensory palette
Invoices beside physical work, containers waiting for collection and the pauses where someone must ask who will pay.
Scarcity
Time, capacity and trust as well as cash.
Failure modes
- Overcommitment
- Unpaid coordination
- Unconfirmed receiving capacity
Open parameters
- Prices
- Monthly costs
- Reserve amounts
- Exact route capacity
