San Francisco — Everyday Connections · wabf original fiction
A fictional network’s scarce resources are receiving capacity, safe time windows and transport as much as donated food.
Catalogue details
Description
Night Table coordinates small prearranged handoffs among participating kitchens, carriers and recipients. A contribution is accepted only when a suitable recipient and handling plan exist. The model is designed for narrative use and does not certify food safety or define a real service.
Economic system type
other
Primary currency
US dollars for purchased supplies and transport; donated goods remain separately recorded
Resource base
Agreed food contributions, suitable containers, available receiving space, transport capacity, contact records and participant time.
Trade networks
A small set of routes links fictional Mission kitchens with agreed recipients and occasional waterfront handoffs. No route, kitchen or recipient list is real or exhaustive.
Wealth distribution
Contributors have unequal money and time; recipients participate in decisions rather than serving only as endpoints.
Key industries
Meal preparation, packing, transport, scheduling and coordination.
Governing bodies
The fictional participant group approves commitments; each handoff has named responsibility. Regulatory and charitable status are intentionally not asserted.
Impact on society
The circuit can turn a useful contribution into a burden if timing, storage or transport is assumed rather than confirmed. Paying couriers and sharing administrative work makes the cost of reliability visible.
Historical evolution
Daniel began with a few direct arrangements. As the network grew, informal memory became insufficient and the group needed clearer records, cancellation rules and shared decision-making.
Notes
WABF original fictional economic model. Exact prices, balances and budgets are intentionally open for a story or game; this is not a statement about San Francisco’s whole economy.
Writing with this entry
Scene starters
- A large donation is declined because accepting it would displace smaller reliable commitments.
- Participants discover that the apparent surplus disappears once transport and receiving time are counted.
Continuity constraints
- The fictional participant group approves commitments; each handoff has named responsibility. Regulatory and charitable status are intentionally not asserted.
- Goods, time and money must not be counted twice; a promised contribution is not the same as a completed handoff.
Adaptation notes
Use the described flows and constraints to build a local ledger or resource game. Choose explicit quantities and prices for that work, and keep them separate from real-world statistics.
Sensory palette
Invoices beside physical work, containers waiting for collection and the pauses where someone must ask who will pay.
Scarcity
Time, capacity and trust as well as cash.
Failure modes
- Overcommitment
- Unpaid coordination
- Unconfirmed receiving capacity
Open parameters
- Prices
- Monthly costs
- Reserve amounts
- Exact route capacity
Connections
- Night Table Network — Fictional model governed by the named group.
- Blue cargo bicycle — Optional transport resource with finite capacity.
