A compact recorder preserves voices and background sound, while leaving consent, context and interpretation unresolved.
Catalogue details
Item type
Portable audio recorder
Description
A compact recorder preserves voices and background sound, while leaving consent, context and interpretation unresolved. The device belongs to Bay Ear; Leila is its usual custodian. Possession does not imply permission to publish recordings.
Appearance
An unbranded black handheld stereo recorder with crossed microphone capsules, a removable grey wind muff, headphones and a padded fabric case. Its screen and controls are ordinary and deliberately do not identify a real product.
Materials
Plastic and metal housing, foam wind protection, fabric case and insulated headphone cable.
Origin
Purchased secondhand for the fictional Bay Ear Archive; no real manufacturer, model or serial number is established.
History
Leila checked its operation, replaced the worn case and assigned it to field work. Its previous recordings are not automatically part of the archive. A later author may introduce a documented repair without making the device magically reliable.
Capabilities
Records local sound to removable digital storage and permits monitored playback. It can make a repeatable record of what reached its microphones at a particular setting and distance. File names and notes can connect a take to an interview.
Limitations
Wind, handling noise, clipping, distance, battery state and storage capacity affect results. It cannot recover a speaker’s intention or prove a file’s date without supporting records. Recording and publication consent remain separate questions.
