Catalogue details

Item type

Field notebook

Description

Jonah’s water-marked notebook holds observations whose value depends on dates, context and the limits he wrote beside them. Jonah owns and usually carries it. Client records are separate; lending the notebook does not authorise copying unrelated personal pages.

Appearance

A small navy clothbound notebook with wrinkled pages, an elastic closure, pencil marks and a tide stain along the lower edge. The illustration’s marks are decorative and do not encode a real measurement.

Materials

Paper, cloth cover, graphite and elastic.

Origin

An ordinary notebook bought for Jonah’s personal field notes; not an official agency register.

History

A splash damaged the lower margins during a fictional outing. Jonah recopied one passage and marked the copy as such. The rest remains legible to him but may require comparison with other notes.

Capabilities

Retains sketches, times, questions and observations without a charged battery. Can record uncertainty in the observer’s own words and preserve the order in which an idea developed.

Limitations

Handwriting, water damage and retrospective additions complicate interpretation. A note is not a calibrated instrument reading unless linked to the instrument and procedure. Missing pages cannot be reconstructed by confidence alone.

Scene starters

  • A margin correction matters more than the clean sentence someone quoted.
  • Two people agree on the words but disagree about whether they were written before or after a conversation.

Continuity constraints

Adaptation notes

Works in a mystery or quiet character drama. Keep observation, interpretation and later annotation visibly distinct.

Sensory palette

Soft warped paper, graphite on a thumb and the snap of a tired elastic band.

Custody

Jonah owns and usually carries it. Client records are separate; lending the notebook does not authorise copying unrelated personal pages.

Narrative use
